WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERY, 1811-1863. English novelist born in Calcutta. At Trinity College, Cambridge until 1829 when he left without taking a degree but where he formed lifelong friendships with poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Edward FitzGerald. He became a refular contributor to magazines and in 1842 joined the staff of "Punch". The publication of "Vanity Fair" in monthly parts in 1847-48 marked Thackeray's emergence as a major novelist. Then followed "Pendennis" (1848-50), "The History of Henry Esmond" (1852), and "The Newcomers" (1853-55). |
