Brown and green leather with gold lettering and rose decorations, excellent condition, 10" x 6 1/2", 7 volumes: Vol. II She Stoops to Conquer (1773), The Grumbler, Vicar of Wakefield (1776); Vol. III Present State of Polite Learing, Citizens of the World Vol. I; Vol. IV Citizens of the World Vol. II (1762); Vol. V The Bee, Essays; Vol. VI Unacknowledged Essays, Prefaces, Introductions, etc.; Vol. VII Biograhies, Reviews; Vol. VIII Reviews, Miscellanies, Letters. Oliver Goldsmith 1728-34, Irish poet, novelist, dramatic. Showed little or no early promise and after nearly a decade was sent to Edinburgh for medical studies but he left for Europe. He wrote "Earth and Animated Nature" in eight volumes, a History of England, one of Rone, one of Greece, "Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe" (1759) and "The Traveller" (1765).

At Trinity College, Cambridge until 1829 when he left without taking a degree but where he formed lifelong friendships with poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Edward FitzGerald. He became a refular contributor to magazines and in 1842 joined the staff of "Punch". The publication of "Vanity Fair" in monthly parts in 1847-48 marked Thackeray's emergence as a major novelist. Then followed "Pendennis" (1848-50), "The History of Henry Esmond" (1852), and "The Newcomers" (1853-55).

This first American Edition is corrected and improved by the addition of numerous articles relative to the institutions of the American Continent. Bound in tan leather, size 11" x 9" and 1 1/2" thick (average). The general condition is excellent for the age of the books. The only visible aging are some water marks mainly on the illustration pages, and four volumes have small (maybe us to 1/2") pieces of leather missing on the spine.
