Oliver Goldsmith 1728-34, Irish poet, novelist, dramatic. Showed little or no early promise and after nearly a decade was sent to Edinburgh for medical studies but he left for Europe. He wrote "Earth and Animated Nature" in eight volumes, a History of England, one of Rone, one of Greece, "Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe" (1759) and "The Traveller" (1765). |
